The last time the Tigers had won consecutive games was a three-game streak between June 25-27. Ten days later, the Tigers finally have won back-to-back games again. They edged the Angels 5-4 yesterday afternoon and topped the Royals 3-1 tonight. The win left the Tigers a game and a half behind the first place Indians, who stunned the Blue Jays 5-4 on a walk-off grand slam by Travis Hafner.
Max Scherzer has not been good the last few weeks and that has hurt the Tigers. He had only two quality starts in his nine starts prior to tonight. So, it was a relief to see him pitch a solid game allowing just one run on six hits and no walks in 6 2/3 innings. More consistent work from Scherzer and Rick Porcello is going to be necessary if they are going to have a chance to win the American League Central this year.
The Tigers offense came from unexpected sources tonight. Ryan Raburn belted a two-run homer in the second to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Utility man Don Kelly added a solo shot in the ninth.
Austin Jackson Leaves Game
Center fielder Austin Jackson left the game in the third inning due to a sore left wrist. He was replaced in center field by Casper Wells who moved over from left field. There is no indication on how he hurt his wrist, but it didn't appear to be serious. If he needs to miss any more time Wells and Andy Dirks will play center in his absence.
